My biome is a tropical rainforest. It is the scientific name for a jungle. A tropical rain forest is usually near the equator. That is why it’s so moist and hot. The things that make a tropical rain forest are the moist and hot conditions, the different types of plants, and a lot of different species of animals.

My pacific region is in South America. It is called Japurá-Solimoes-Negro. It is in north western Brazil, Venezuela, and Colombia. It is named for the three rivers that are here.

Even though this biome gets over 100 inches of rain each year, not a lot of plants grow on the ground. This tropical rain forest gets 12 hours of sunlight and only 2% reaches the ground. The branches and leaves of the trees grow upward preventing the sun light to come down. The places you would see plants on the ground are near river banks and on hill sides. Plants grow more on the hill sides because the angle of the growing surface allows sunlight to reach the lower levels. Tall trees and palms are the most common plants.

The most common herbivores are squirrel monkeys, red-handed tamarins, black spider monkey, lizards, fish and frogs. Almost all of the animals live in the trees. The antwren (bird) likes to eat a fruit similar to a pineapple (bromeliad) and scarlet macaws like miriti palm nuts for dinner.

The unusual predators in the region are the yapok (water opossum) and coral snake. The yapok is one of the only animals that can get food from the trees such as insects or lizards, or underwater like fish, crabs and frogs. The red, black and yellow coral snake (related to the cobra) has a poisonous bite that can paralyze its favorite food the tegus lizard. Giant river otters love to munch on arawana fish.

The middle of this biome does not really have people living there. There are people along the rivers, and they are a threat to the area. The cutting down of trees has damaged the homes of many plants and animals. Other human activities that cause a problem in this region are mining, cattle ranching, uncontrolled fires and the building of villages.

I always wanted to see a tropical rain forest. This gave me an idea of how a tropical rain forest would be. I would like to see a squirrel monkey. I love monkeys so I would go there if I could. I think my region would be a nice place to visit.

This is a swamp that is connected to one of the rivers. There are three main rivers.
